My Hitachi has been working fine for 3 years now and I’ve used it about 60 hours total. I make sure to check the oil frequently and when I store it away I drain the lines. If you know how to maintain your car just a little you can sure do the same thing with your backup generator.

Remember that you’re dealing with electricity so be careful and don’t do something unless you’re darn sure. Get an electrician to help you because everything could backfire and blow up on you. And don’t just buy one particular model because its cheaper than the others. Do your homework which is really easy when you spend time on the web or go to home depot.

Portables are cheaper so if you don’t get too many utility outages in your neighborhood why spend the extra money for the standby? Seems silly to through your money away for just the potential of a big time storm or something else that will knock off your power.

If you’re lazy like me then get a standby because it isn’t too cool getting up in the middle of the night and plugging in a portable generator just to get some juice back into the house.

I’m not so sure about that because portable is definitely cheaper and not much worse off in power for the average house but I guess to each his own is the answer. My portable is great and hasn’t failed me yet. It’s Hitachi.

Standby is definitely the way to go when you have the extra bucks to make it happen. It’s quieter and uses less fuel plus everything is automatic. Don’t forget though to do the annual maintenance and follow the instructions.

Standby is the only way to go if you have the extra bucks. But be careful of installation charges because they can set you back anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 for about a 3 hour job by a professional electrician depending on your location.

We added a permanent standby generator a few years ago and when we sold the house the realtor told us it was one of the selling points to the buyer because they came from a part of the country that was always having unexpected power outages.
