Three types of warm season grasses.

Posted by Tiara,

There are 3 types of warm season grasses that are commonly used.  Bermuda, zoysia and centipede grass.  Both zoysia and Bermuda have had hybrids developed which will grow in colder areas.  These two tend to turn brown very quickly at the first drop in temperature and are the first to green when the weather warms.  Both Bermuda and centipede can be mown very close and Bermuda is often used on golf greens.  Centipede is very low maintenance.  It needs less mowing than the other 2 and can grow in salty soil.  They all will remain green year round if the temperature is warm enough and can fare well in drought conditions.

I have always had bent grass on my lawns and have had great results with it.  It seems a little hard to get going at first, but after that it is easy to maintain and takie care of.

This was an interesting blog for me.  I am getting ready to seed or sod my yard and need to decide what grass to use.  I guess I will need to do some more research before deciding.

I recently put in a bent grass putting green.  I was amazed how short you can cut that grass.  You need to really pay attention to watering when it is that short though.  The mowers not cheap either.

I tried to seed my lawn with a hybrid of zoysia back in 2007.  I live in a colder climate and had a bad experience with it.  Now I am back to using old Kentucky blue grass.

I first started using centipede grass about three years ago.  I live on the coast in Georgia and was turned on to it by a neighbor.  It has worked great for me and it really is low maintenance.  I bet I mow half the amount of times I would with zoysia.
